German scientists at the Max Planck Institute for the Biology of Aging have studied a drug called rapamycin and say it can prolong life if used correctly. Doctors have used it for over 50 years as an immunosuppressant to prevent organ rejection. The New Atlas writes about it.
It had a “rejuvenating” effect on fruit flies, worms and mice. It turns out that introducing rapamycin to flies in the first days of life is just as effective as lifelong administration of the drug.
However, using it later in life is not as effective. And the use of rapamycin at a very late age does not give a result at all.
“These results indicate that taking rapamycin for a short time in youth can significantly increase life expectancy. Of course, so far the experiments are focused on the study of fruit flies and mice, but in the future the results of this study may be applicable to humans,” experts said.
