Geomagnetic storm recorded on Earth – scientists

As a result of a solar flare on Earth, the appearance of a G2 class geomagnetic storm was recorded. Scientists believe it will continue until the end of the week.

A large area that appeared on the Sun caused powerful flares and coronal mass ejections. Streams of charged particles approached our planet and caused a geomagnetic storm, writes ScienceAlert.

They fell into the Earth’s magnetosphere at a speed of about 600 km / s, which led to the appearance of bright auroras in Canada and the United States.

On August 9, these streams of solar particles were still coming to Earth, but at a speed of 550 km/s.

According to scientists, since August 8, a G2 class geomagnetic storm began on Earth, which is considered moderate and will not have a strong impact on the operation of satellites and communication systems on the planet. In total, geomagnetic storms, depending on their destructive power, have 5 classes.

At the same time, experts have not yet classified the solar flare that caused the geomagnetic storm, but certainly know that it is, contrary to forecasts, rather weak.

Scientists also believe that the geomagnetic storm will continue until the end of the week, but new flares can also be expected from the Sun at this time, which may be stronger.

In addition, scientists warn that almost constant geomagnetic storms of varying strength will be our companions for life in the next two years. The sun is gradually increasing its activity, as the solar maximum is approaching – a time in the 11-year solar cycle when there are many powerful eruptions. According to NASA forecasts, this moment will come at the end of 2024.

Remember that last year the largest magnetic storm was recorded on planet Earth. The natural phenomenon is considered the biggest since 2019.
