Lightning of record power shot down into space

Lightning fires about 300 coulombs of electric charge, while ordinary lightning reaches a maximum of five coulombs.

Observing a tornado in Oklahoma in May 2018 allowed several instruments to detect lightning that released energy equal to 60 ordinary lightning strikes in space. New Atlas reported this.

Because of this, a group of scientists studied this phenomenon in more detail. It turned out that this particular phenomenon was the most powerful of all observed, throwing up about 300 coulombs of electric charge. In comparison, normal lightning usually tops out at five pendants.

Radio frequency radiation was detected at an altitude of 22 to 45 km. At this height, the discharge is no longer visible. In general, visibility is at a height of 15-20 kilometers, that is, from the top of the cloud where the release occurred.

“The VHF and optical signals definitively confirmed what researchers suspected but had not yet proven: lightning. VHF radio emissions are emitted by small structures called streamers that are at the tip of lightning formations. , while the strongest current flows behind this tip. in an electrically conductive channel called the leader,” said Steve Kammer, author of the study.

It was previously reported that a spot that appeared on the Sun caused a powerful flare and coronal mass ejections.
