According to the telescope James Webbamateur on Reddit managed to collect the first image of the system TRAPPIST-1, the most important candidate for life in space.
Using publicly available data, Arizonaskies2022 built the first image of a star, possibly as one of its planets passed through it.
Importance of TRAPPIST-1
TRAPPIST-1 it’s like the solar system, with seven Earth-sized planets orbiting their star, and three of them in what’s called the “habitable zone.”
This star is a red dwarf only 40 light years away, so it is being studied for its great potential to hold water.
“Our goal,” said Olivia Lim, principal investigator for the JWST program, which explores four of the seven planets. TRAPPIST-1 a planetary society“is to determine whether the TRAPPIST-1b, c, g and h planets have atmospheres, and for this we will try to detect features of molecules, such as carbon dioxide, water and ozone, in the transit spectra of these planets.”
The results of such studies will tell us not only about TRAPPIST-1 and their planets, but can help us make educated guesses about other solar systems and where best to look for life. For example, if we find that rocky planets closest to a star don’t have atmospheres potentially removed by solar flares from their host stars, it could help us determine which place in the solar system is most likely to harbor life.
“This system provides an opportunity to prove the concept of a habitable zone outside the solar system,” he added.
James Webb is still on his mission
James Webb is the world’s leading space science observatory to help unravel the mysteries of our solar system, it will look beyond distant worlds around other stars and explore the mysterious structures and origins of our universe and our place in it.
The study of new stars and planets in search of an answer to the most important question of mankind: are we alone in the Universe?
