NASA and Roscosmos seems to calm the dispute that has marred cooperation on board International space station. After announcing the departure of cosmonauts to the ISS by 2024, Russian officials have finally reconsidered this measure and want to keep their employees on board until at least 2028.
According to Reuters, NASA has received reports from representatives of the Russian space agency about the possibility of admitting astronauts until its own orbital port is operational.
Russia is expected to complete construction of its own space station within six years, a timeframe similar to that proposed by Roscosmos put an end to this space cooperation agreement with POTwhich has been going on for more than two decades.
From ISS to ROSS
POT received an amendment to the statement of Yuri Borisov, the newly appointed Director General of the Russian Agency Roscosmoson the termination of the agreement with its American counterpart in 2024.
Cathy Lueders, Head of Space Operations POTclarified that Russian plans are considering the possibility of maintaining their presence on the ISS until the completion of the construction of ROSS, its future independent orbital post.
According to a US official, NASA has not received “there is no indication at any operating level that anything has changed” and states that relations with Roscosmos remain “usual”.
Russia will keep the agreement with NASA
Vladimir Solovyov, Russian head of missions to the ISS, confirmed the organization’s position in an interview, noting that Russia will leave the space station when the ROSS is operational.
“We must keep in mind that if we stop manned flights for several years, it will be very difficult to restore what has been achieved,” he said. Solovyov added.
