USA will resume joint flights in international space station (ISS) With Russia ‘guarantee continuity of operations’ despite trying to isolate Moscow over Ukraine invasion, space agency says POT.

Two American astronauts will fly aboard a Russian rocket Union into two separate missions, the first of which is scheduled for September. For their part, two Russian cosmonauts will board SpaceX rockets for the first time.

The mission was planned for a long time, but there was no green light from Moscow and it is not known what decision it will take after the start of the war with Ukraine, at the end of February.

Over the past few weeks, officials from POT They confirmed their interest in holding it.

The announcement came just hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin fired Dmitry Rogozin, director of the Russian space agency Roscosmos. After Russia’s offensive on Ukraine, the latter made very hostile statements against the West.

“For security international space stationprotect the lives of astronauts and ensure the continued presence of Americans in space, POT complex flights on US and Russian spacecraft will resume Union”, – said POT this is a statement.

American astronaut Frank Rubio will fly aboard a rocket Union which is expected to take off on September 21 along with two Russian cosmonauts, and American Loral O’Hara will do so on a Russian spacecraft in 2023.

In addition, Anna Kikina, the only active female cosmonaut, will be part of the Crew-5 crew, which will launch into space aboard a SpaceX rocket in September. Cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev will travel with Crew-6 in 2023.

Interdependence

FROM USA suspended space shuttles in 2011 and before the first flight of a private firm SpaceX to ISS in 2020, the North American Program was forced to send American astronauts on an orbiter, buying seats aboard the rockets from Roscosmos Union.

Since SpaceX’s first flight to ISS in 2020 this monopoly ended, with crews flying almost exclusively rockets from their own countries.

The last astronaut to be on board Union it was American Mark Vande Hey, in April 2021. He returned almost a year later on a Russian ship, despite the fact that the war in Ukraine had already begun.

Upon his return to Earth, he stated that the Russian cosmonauts remain “friends” despite diplomatic tensions between the two countries.

The joint operations announced on Friday are being carried out without financial compensation. USA introduced harsh sanctions against Moscow, partially affecting the Russian aerospace industry, against which Dmitry Rogozin protested tirelessly.

This week, the European Space Agency announced the end of cooperation with Russia in a joint ExoMars mission that has already been put on hold for several months.

But international space station it’s unique. “It was conceived as interdependent and depends on the contribution of each of the space agencies to the work,” the agency explained. POT on Friday. “No agency can operate independently of the others.” (AFP)
