Researchers say that even moderate alcohol consumption increases iron levels in the brain.
Scientists have discovered that even moderate alcohol consumption can reduce the brain’s thinking functions. This was reported by the New Atlas.
Experts analyzed the data of more than 20 thousand people from the British system UK Biobank. The experiment took into account the amount of alcohol consumed and the level of iron in the brain, which was recorded using MRI. Increases in iron levels were recorded when people consumed more than seven units of alcohol per week.
Increased iron levels in the basal ganglia also lead to slowing of executive function, decreased intelligence, and inhibition of reaction.
Note that in the study, a unit of alcohol was defined as 10 milliliters of pure alcohol. For example, a large glass of wine may contain 2 to 3 units of alcohol, while a typical can of beer may contain 1.5 to 2 units of alcohol.
Recall that earlier scientists from the Institute of Public Health and Tropical Medicine at Tulane University in the United States investigated that eating salty foods leads to early death.
