During the reconstruction of Notre Dame Cathedral, archaeologists discovered unique findings: more than a thousand fragments of art.
During the large-scale reconstruction of Notre Dame Cathedral, which began after the devastating fire on April 15, 2019, archaeologists have made amazing discoveries, Art news reports.
During excavations under the cathedral building, researchers discovered 1,035 fragments of historical works of art, hundreds of burials and unique architectural elements.
Archaeologists were allowed to explore a small area, 0.4 meters deep, under the stone floor of the cathedral. Among the artifacts found were life-size limestone statues, including an image of Jesus Christ, and other sculptural fragments. The most important find is a lead sarcophagus, which, according to preliminary data, may belong to the French poet Joachin du Bellay.
Elements of a 12th-century lecture hall were also found, which once separated the choir and sanctuary from the hall for the faithful. The discovery shed light on the cathedral’s architectural heritage, allowing us to better understand how medieval craftsmen built it.
The study of charred beams preserved after the fire made it possible to obtain new information about the climatic conditions of the Middle Ages.
We remind you that a fire occurred at Notre Dame Cathedral on April 15, 2019, which caused great damage. The fire engulfed the roof and spire of the cathedral, causing damage to the century-old shrine. Today the reconstruction of the cathedral is almost complete; it lasted five years, allowing not only to restore the architectural monument, but also to explore its hidden history.
It was previously reported that archaeologists during excavations at the Syrian Tell Umm el-Marra discovered clay cylinders with unique symbols, which are the oldest examples of alphabetic writing in human history.
