Scientists who have already been able to see images taken by the telescope James Webb showed that they were touched by their quality.
POT is gearing up for a big imaging launch on July 12th, which seems like a completely innovative time for astronomy.
Great feelings for space
Head of scientific mission POTThomas Zurbuchen, indicated that these images would provide “historical data” for science.
“It’s very hard not to look at the universe in a new light and not have a deeply personal moment,” he said at a press conference. “It’s an emotional moment when you see nature suddenly reveal some of its secrets. I want you to submit it and look forward to it.”
This opinion is shared by the joint administrator POTPam Melroy: “What I saw touched me as a scientist, engineer and person.”
The images are expected to include unprecedented views of the depths of the universe and the atmosphere surrounding the distant exoplanet, which could give us insight into a habitable world other than ours.
year project
POT shared some images taken by the telescope during the preparation phase, but it’s not clear exactly what the full color images will look like. “Of course, there are things we hope to see, but with a new telescope and this new high-resolution infrared data, we just won’t know until we see them,” said Joseph De Pasquale, STScI’s lead scientific imaging developer.
After the observatory takes its first correct images, it will begin scientific observations. Astronomers will analyze the data obtained by infrared sensors and publish articles about their findings.
James Webb is the world’s leading space science observatory and, when fully operational, will help unravel the mysteries of our solar system, look beyond distant worlds around other stars, and explore the mysterious structures and origins of our universe and our place in it.
