The research of scientists has opened up new opportunities in understanding the molecular mechanisms that control the functioning of cells and the development of organisms.
The Nobel Committee announced the winners of the medicine and physiology prize on October 7. In 2024, Victor Ambros and Gary Ravkan received the prestigious award for their discovery of microRNAs, molecules that play an important role in regulating genes once they are activated. This was reported by the press service of the Nobel Foundation.
The research of scientists has opened up new opportunities in understanding the molecular mechanisms that control the functioning of cells and the development of organisms.
This year the prize was awarded to two scientists for the discovery of microRNA molecules that regulate gene function. The information stored in our chromosomes can be compared to the instructions for all the cells in our body. Each cell contains the same chromosomes, so it contains exactly the same set of genes and exactly the same set of instructions.
However, different types of cells, such as muscle cells and nerve cells, have very different properties. The question arises as to how exactly these differences arise. The answer lies in gene regulation, which allows each cell to choose only the appropriate instructions. This ensures that only the correct set of genes are active in each cell type.
Scientists are interested in how different types of cells are formed. They found microRNAs, a new class of small RNA molecules that play an important role in gene regulation.
The discovery revealed an entirely new dimension of gene regulation. MicroRNAs have proven to be fundamentally important for the development and function of organisms.
We remind you that President Vladimir Zelensky has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2024. He is one of the favorites among 286 candidates.
Let’s add that the winners of the Nobel Prize in Physics for 2023 are scientists who conducted research on the dynamics of electrons in atoms: Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz and Anne Lhuillier.
