During excavations in Italy, 27 silver coins from the Republican period of Ancient Rome were found.
On the remote Italian island of Pantelleria in the Sicily region, archaeologists have discovered 27 silver coins from the time of the Ancient Roman Republic. It was reported by Reuters.
The find was made during excavations on the territory of the acropolis, a fortified part of an ancient Greek colony founded in the 7th century BC.
Study leader Thomas Schäfer from the University of Tübingen explained that the coins, dated between 94 and 74 BC, may have been hidden during pirate attacks. The find provides important information about the events and trade contracts of the Republican period in the Mediterranean.
The coins were discovered thanks to the recent heavy rains, which softened the ground, allowing the discovery of artifacts, some of which were lying under the rock.
In 2010, 107 Roman coins belonging to the same period were also discovered in the archaeological park.
Even earlier, three famous heads of statues of the emperors Caesar, Titus and Agrippina were found in this place.
It was previously reported that archaeologists in the city of Eretria, Greece, discovered a mosaic depicting naked satyrs, characters from ancient Greek mythology.
