A study was conducted in which over a thousand children aged 9 to 11 years old were interviewed.
Canadian researchers have found that children whose parents spend a lot of time using smartphones are more likely to experience anxiety, difficulty concentrating and hyperactivity. This was shown by a study that surveyed more than a thousand children aged 9 to 11 years, reports MedicalXpress.
The team chose this particular age for a reason. According to the authors of the work, in this scope, the development of children is especially dependent on external factors. This age is also associated with a higher risk of mental health problems.
During the study, scientists examined children in Canada twice – in 2020 and at the beginning of 2022.
The children are asked to read the statements and say whether they agree with them. Specifically, participants discussed whether they wished their parents would spend less time on phones or other devices.
Children also answered whether the fact that their parents use smartphones when communicating annoys them.
During the study, participants were screened for any mental health problems such as anxiety, depression, hyperactivity or inattention that may have developed during the study.
Scientists have concluded that a higher level of anxiety symptoms in a child is related to his belief that parents spend too much time on their phones.
“Parental time spent on smartphones is also associated with higher levels of inattention and hyperactivity symptoms later in the child’s development,” the study authors said.
However, the results remained almost the same regardless of the gender of the child.
At the same time, the authors of the work are not in a hurry to draw conclusions about the root of this connection: children are more worried because their parents are obsessed with phones, or adults, because behavioral problems in children, the device is used. as a salvation.
We remind you that the Russian aggressors took another 1,000 children from the Kherson region, allegedly for “health improvement.”
