Russia is spreading messages about U.S. biolab in Ukraine and provocations using weapons of mass destruction.
In addition, Russian media claims that Ukraine is deliberately infecting the residents of Donbass with tuberculosis and cholera. The Ministry of Health of Ukraine, in support of the USAID project, has refuted some myths of Russian propaganda, reports Ukrainska Pravda.
Myth 1: Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are bioweapon
Misinformation is spreading in the Russian media that Pfizer and Moderna are cutting budgets for clinical trials of their vaccines. The drugs are allegedly US bioweapon.
The corresponding agreement was signed in 2005, they said in Russia.
How is it really?
Nor does the agreement between Ukraine and the United States provide for the conduct of “military biological experiments.”
In 2005, the Department of Health and the United States Department of Defense signed a cooperation agreement in the field of preventing the spread of technologies, pathogens and knowledge that could be used in the development of biological weapons. Its essence is to counter the use of weapons and infectious diseases, and not vice versa. The document is in the public domain.
As part of the program to reduce the biological threat of the United States to Ukraine, the laboratories were modernized. Their activities are aimed at reducing the risk of epidemic (as, for example, during an outbreak of COVID-19).
Both companies – both Pfizer and Moderna have conducted clinical trials in Russia, for some reason they are almost silent about it.
Myth 2: Ukrainian authorities infected people with tuberculosis in the Lugansk region using banknotes
Mass “infection” with tuberculosis occurred in 2020 in the Slavyanoserbsky district of the Luhansk region (part of the Luhansk region is temporarily occupied). People were allegedly infected because of counterfeit money infected with the causative agent of tuberculosis.
How is it really?
In November 2020, representatives of the “LPR” claimed that 100-ruble banknotes were smashed in the city of Slavyanoserbsk. And the health of those who took them deteriorated drastically.
The Ukrainians actually dropped counterfeit money, but along with campaign postcards, in which they called on Lugansk residents to return to Ukraine. In addition, tuberculosis is transmitted by airborne droplets.
Myth 3: the collection of cholera pathogens in Mariupol is evidence of the preparation of a Ukrainian provocation using weapons of mass destruction
Prior to the conquest of Mariupol, biological laboratories worked in the city. They investigated and elaborated on the causes of cholera.
That is why on February 25, 2022, the workers of the Mariupol laboratory allegedly destroyed the collection of pathogens, especially, the pathogens of cholera, anthrax and tularemia.
How is it really?
Russia speaks of two laboratories, but suggests the name of only one of them – Mariupol.
In connection with the war, its workers stopped working. The activity of this institution is not connected with the creation of weapons of mass destruction.
The laboratory should monitor the circulation of infectious agents and analyze and predict their spread.
In particular, the laboratory should conduct epidemic surveillance of cholera and carry out its diagnosis. Similar centers for control and prevention of infectious diseases operate in all regions of Ukraine.
Almost every year the causative agent of cholera is found in the reservoirs of Ukraine, so it is not surprising that the laboratories of the Ministry of Health carefully monitor the spread of this infectious disease.
Regarding the destruction of pathogens (microorganisms that cause disease) in the laboratory on February 25, 2022, it is not possible to find a letter or order from the Ministry of Health to confirm.
At the same time, on March 11, 2022, the WHO recommended that Ukraine destroy pathogens to prevent the leakage of harmful pathogens as a result of clashes. There is no evidence that Ukraine sent infectious agents to the United States.
Also, such an assumption is unreasonable, since the United States has its own system for monitoring and preventing infectious diseases, in particular cholera.
Myth 4: Humanitarian aid with medicines from Russia is brought to the Kherson region
Local Telegram channels write about Russia’s assistance to medicines in the Kherson region, which originated in the Crimea, Moscow and Voronezh.
How is it really?
From the beginning of the Russian occupation, the situation with drugs was very difficult in the Kherson region. Now the drugs are brought from the occupied Crimea and the Russian Federation, they are sold without appropriate storage conditions – from car trunks to local markets. In addition, the drug is not certified and may be counterfeit.
Recall, it was previously reported that on June 26, 689,000 Ukrainians did not receive a second dose of vaccine for COVID-19 coronavirus, and more than 14 million people did not receive booster vaccinations.
