A new species of vegetarian piranha discovered by scientists in the Amazon has been named Sauron after the Lord of the Rings villain.
Scientists have discovered a new species of herbivorous fish from the piranha family. Phys.org reported it.
Scientists have officially named it Myloplus sauron, after Sauron, because its round body and distinctive orange and black markings closely resemble the evil eye of the fictional character from Lord of the Rings by John Tolkien.
A new species of herbivorous fish of the piranha family, in addition to bright spots on the body, has teeth similar to humans. This feature is due to the fish’s vegetarian diet.
Myloplus sauron is found only in the Singa River basin, a Brazilian tributary of the Amazon, which contains more than 600 species of fish, including more than 70 species found nowhere else in the world.
The new species was discovered as part of a study of Amazonian piranhas and their relatives, which are difficult to distinguish due to the changes in appearance that occur throughout the life of the fish.
It was previously reported that the smallest known monkey, which lived 11 million years ago, was found in Germany.
