An emperor penguin visited Academician Vernadsky’s station. The last time polar explorers recorded the appearance of such a bird was in December 2020.
For the first time in four years, an Antarctic station Academician Vernadsky visited by the emperor penguin. This was reported by the National Antarctic Science Center.
The scientists noted that meeting the birds near the station was a rare event, as the animals usually choose cooler areas.
“Such a visit came as a surprise, as the imperials do not nest in the area Vernadsky, and choose a cooler place. Their nearest colony is located more than 300 kilometers from us,” the polar explorers wrote.
The penguin walks near the station on the second day. The Antarctic bird has chosen sites near a geomagnetic observatory that collects data on the Earth’s magnetic field. According to the researchers, the bird is still very young because it has a gray color in some parts of its head.
The last time such a bird was seen up close was Academician Vernadsky in December 2020.
