The study offers a practical approach to improving organic farming practices and encourages the use of environmentally friendly and sustainable crop protection practices.
Researchers from the Tokyo University of Science conducted an experiment led by Professor Genichiro Arimura, evaluating the effectiveness of 11 essential oils in activating tomato defense responses as an alternative to pesticides. The study was published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.
It showed that rose essential extract (REO) increased plant resistance to insect pests.
Tomato plants treated with REO had less leaf damage caused by moth larvae and mite pests. Field tests also confirmed the effectiveness of REO, reducing pest damage to tomatoes by 45.5% compared to the control group.
Professor Arimura said that REO contains β-citronellol, a well-known insect repellent, which enhances its effectiveness. Moreover, REO attracts mite eaters, providing additional protection to the plant.
“This research offers a practical approach to improving organic farming practices and encourages the use of environmentally friendly and sustainable crop protection practices. The scientific findings can inform the development of new organic farming systems and contribute to the availability of effective and natural pesticides. With the growing interest in environmentally friendly practices in agriculture, the research of Professor Arimura and his team opens new perspectives for the development of safer and more sustainable approaches to plant protection, which contribute to the conservation of biodiversity and environmental health,” experts said.
We remind you that early scientists said that pesticides destroy the cognitive abilities of bees.
