Under anesthesia, doctors performed a bronchoscopy and removed a tailor’s pin, which was stuck in the mucous membrane and did not move, thanks to which significant injuries were prevented.
In Belgorod-Dnestrovsky, Odessa region, doctors successfully operated on a teenager who swallowed a 4 cm long pin. This was reported by the publication Bessarabia INFORM.
It is reported that the pin is removed endoscopically – without cutting the tissue.
A 15-year-old boy with a foreign sharp object in his trachea was hospitalized on February 2. The boy accidentally inhaled the pin and it got lodged in his lung.
Based on the results of a computed tomography scan, doctors found that the pin was stuck not in the esophagus, but in the trachea.
Under anesthesia, doctors performed a bronchoscopy and removed the pin, which was stuck in the mucous membrane and did not move, thanks to which significant injuries were prevented.
“The man was really very lucky. Such cases happen very rarely. And not all hospitals can perform such an operation, even in regional centers,” said endoscopist surgeon Denis Gessler, who performed this operation on the jeweler.
The patient is reported to be in stable condition under close medical supervision and receiving antibiotic therapy.
The case when a sharp object is stuck “successfully” is rare, and it happened for the first time in the practice of an experienced surgeon.
“In the worst case, a sharp object can cause a puncture – penetrate the lung and more than all the subsequent consequences. In addition, this pin can penetrate the heart through the wall of the bronchus,” added the doctor.
It was previously reported that a team of Kyiv and Lviv doctors performed a heart-lung complex transplantation operation for the first time in Ukraine.
