Scientists analyzed the observational results obtained over 13 years from the powerful Fermi Space Telescope.
NASA astronomers have discovered an unexpected “signal” coming from outside our galaxy. This was reported by Science Alert.
According to Francis Reddy of the Hoddard Space Flight Center, this is “an unexpected and as yet unexplained feature outside our galaxy.”
The agency’s scientists were analyzing 13 years of data from the Fermi Space Telescope gamma-ray telescope when they noticed a mysterious signal.
This powerful telescope can detect gamma rays, which are huge bursts of energetic light that are thousands to hundreds of billions of times larger than what the human eye can see.
These are known to occur frequently during stellar explosions or nuclear explosions.
“This was a completely random discovery. We found a much stronger signal in a different part of the sky than we were looking for,” said Alexander Kashlinsky, a cosmologist at the University of Maryland and Space Flight Center. Hoddard.
They are looking for one of the oldest gamma functions to create the first atoms – known as the cosmic microwave background, or CMB. Astronomers generally believe that this structure creates the motion of our solar system.
At the same time, the researchers detected a signal coming from a similar direction of about the same magnitude as another object containing some of the most energetic cosmic particles they had ever seen.
“We found a gamma-ray dipole, but its peak was in the southern sky, far from the WAC, and its magnitude was 10 times larger than we expected from our motion,” said Chris Schrader, an astrophysicist at Hoddard.
Scientists believe that this discovery may be related to cosmic gamma rays observed by the Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina in 2017.
It was previously reported that astronomers first noticed caves on a comet.
