For the first time in Ukraine, operations were performed on a baby who could not breathe fully. This was reported by NDSB Okhmatdyt.
The boy was born with a rare syndrome – asphyxic thoracic dystrophy. It occurs no more than 1 time in 130 thousand newborns. These babies are born with small, bell-shaped chests and stunted lung function.
“The essence of the operation is that 6 ribs are successively intersected in a checkerboard pattern. And then they are connected to special metal structures in such a way that from the long segments of two ribs a rib is made twice as long. Because of this, the volume of the breast increases,” explained Ohmatdyt.
The operation was performed in two stages: 1.5 months on the right side and 2.5 months on the left.
