Scholars believe that such swords were the standard weapon of Roman soldiers, and that the Jewish rebels kept them in a cache for later use.
In a cave on the shores of the Dead Sea in Israel, archaeologists discovered four Roman swords and a pole-like weapon known as a pilum dating back to the 1900s. This was reported by CNN.
It is noted that a rare treasure of weapons, discovered in an almost inaccessible space when a team of scientists photographed an ancient inscription on a stalactite, was completely preserved, and the steel blades are still in wooden cases.
Three swords are 60-65 centimeters long. The fourth is 45 centimeters long. Researchers believe that Jewish rebels hid the swords after they “trophied” them with the Roman army.
Israel Antiquities Authority director Eli Escucido said that the dry climate of the desert around the Dead Sea made it possible to preserve artifacts that would not survive elsewhere in Israel.
“This is a unique time capsule that contains fragments of scrolls, coins from the Jewish Revolt, leather sandals, and now even swords – sharp, which seem to be just hidden now,” he said.
During further excavations, a bronze coin of Bar Kokhba (the performance of the Judean population against the Romans) dated 132–135 AD was discovered.

It was previously reported that near the city of Nördlingen during the excavation of a Middle Bronze Age burial, archaeologists discovered a sword more than 3,000 years old.
