Gorilla Liesel was born in 1977 and had osteoarthritis, a disease that occurs when the cartilage in the joints wears down over time, resulting in constant pain and stiffness during movement.
At the Budapest Zoo, a female gorilla named Liesel became the first primate to receive stem cell therapy. It was written by the University of Sheffield.
Stem cells are a special type of cell that can develop into many other types of cells. In this procedure, the main goal is to help repair the damaged cartilage in the joints. For humans, this may seem like the next step in the development of medical science, but for the world of gorillas, this is an unprecedented precedent,” the message said.
Liesel was born in 1977 and had osteoarthritis, a disease that occurs when the cartilage in the joints wears down over time, resulting in constant pain and stiffness during movement.
“Modern zoo practices and conditions are so advanced that many animals, including gorillas, live longer. The challenge now is to provide them with the best medical care, especially when they face challenges of old age. And here stem cell therapy came to the rescue,” said Endre Sos, head veterinarian at the Budapest Zoo.
The stem cells were taken from the fat tissue of a young female gorilla named Nyaunda during her surgery. Once removed, these cells are processed and stored by Stem CellX’s expert team until they are ready for Liesel’s treatment.
“Being part of such a unique project is a pleasure to the team, especially Professor Mark Wilkinson of the University of Sheffield. But it is not just about a gorilla. What is special about this method is that it can be used more widely . If Liesel responds well to this therapy, then you can suggest that similar treatments may also be useful in other animals,” added the university.
Recall that in Nigeria for the first time in many years, the world’s rarest gorilla with cubs was photographed.
