The researchers decided to associate the shark with a new species, not only by the unusual egg capsules, but also by the shining white iris of its oval eyes, reminiscent of a cat.
Scientists from Australia solved the mystery of the egg left in the museum and identified a new species of sharks. This was reported by The Guardian.
The first unusual egg capsule was discovered about 40 years ago, but then it was not possible to understand what kind of cat sharks the embryo belonged to. Recently, scientists re-examined it and realized that it was not like other shark eggs, with unique T-shaped ridges.
Therefore, this led to the hunting of shark eggs in museum collections, which eventually led to the discovery of a new species. This is Apristurus ovicorrugatus – a ghost shark with fried eggs.
“The unique shape certainly gives strength to the walls of the egg capsules,” said Will White of the Australian National Ichthyological Collection.
He added that cat sharks may have evolved a shape to avoid predators. For example, sea snails attack shark eggs by drilling a hole and then sucking out the contents.
It was previously reported that researchers have found a clue as to why the immune system of sharks is so effective that it can prevent diseases.
