Wimbledon’s women’s dress code has changed for the first time in 146 years

In the past, women have spoken about menstrual problems during the contest, and some have used hormonal birth control to delay their periods.

One of the main events in the world of tennis – the Wimbledon tournament for the first time in 146 years has changed its strict dress code. In 2023, the tournament administration made concessions to female players, allowing dark-colored underwear to be worn. This was reported by WWD.

The goal is to reduce the anxiety of female tennis players during menstruation and not put them in an uncomfortable position in front of the audience in case of unexpected situations. However, panties and shorts still cannot be longer than their skirts or tennis shorts.

As you know, since the first Wimbledon tournament in 1877, players have to wear white uniforms. Shades of off-white or ivory are strictly prohibited. On the neckline or sleeves, only one colored edge is allowed, no longer than one centimeter. When Roger Federer played in orange-soled sneakers in 2013, it became a scandal.

By the way, women were first allowed to participate in Wimbledon in 1884. They did not always wear short tennis skirts – until the 1920s athletes began to abandon long dresses, replacing them with shorter hemlines.

However, in recent years, the legend of tennis, the American athlete Billie Jean King and Judy Murray advocated changing the rules for wearing underwear.

“We always worry because we wear white all the time. And what you wear under your clothes is important for your menstrual cycle,” King explains.

In a statement, All England Club CEO Sally Bolton said she hoped the new rule would “help players focus solely on their game by removing a potential source of anxiety.”

Tennis players have met the current innovations with enthusiasm.

“I think it will take a lot of stress off me and the other girls in the dressing room, of course,” said US professional tennis player Coco Gauff.
