Participants will overcome more than six thousand kilometers through the territory of Peru, Colombia and Brazil.
An international team of researchers will begin a six-month expedition to the Amazon in April 2024. Scientists want to know the exact length of the river to know which is longer – this or the Nile. It was reported by Agence France-Presse.
“The main goal is to map the river in every detail and also to document its biodiversity,” said Brazilian researcher and project coordinator Iurie Sanada.
The expedition will be called the Amazon River: from the glaciers to the sea. It starts in the Andes. Participants will overcome more than six thousand kilometers through the territory of Peru, Colombia and Brazil and reach the coast of the Atlantic Ocean.
The expedition will be financed by international organizations.
“If successful, both expeditions will go to the Nile,” Sanada said.
By the way, today in the Guinness Book of Records the first place is occupied by the Nile with a length of 6.65 thousand km. And the headwaters of the Apurimac River in southern Peru are considered the source of the American River. But in 2014, American researcher James Kontos put forward an alternative theory that the Amazon River has its source in northern Peru, so it is at least 77 km longer than commonly believed.
Remember that the Amazon rainforest could become a dry plain, where only rare shrubs will grow, by 2064. This will happen not only because of the climate, but will also have a hand in humans, predicted University of Florida professor Robert Walker.
