Scientists have discovered a figurine for playing board games. It is made from the lower jaw of cows.
A team of archaeologists from Cotswold Archeology made a discovery while excavating a medieval building in Bedfordshire, England. Heritage Daily writes about it.
“In the Middle Ages, “mini tabletops” were widely used for various board games, when two players rolled dice and moved their pieces in rows of marks. The word “tabletop” comes from Latin word tabula, meaning “board” , and first appeared in Britain in Roman times,” the statement said.
In addition to the “mini tabletop”, archaeologists have excavated a medieval timber-framed building and several medieval enclosed ditches.
It has been noted that the most popular board game among the Romans was the Ludus duodecim scriptorium. It translates as “the game of twelve marks”. Players use three cube game dice, and each participant has 15 chips in his hands.
“It is not always possible to determine to which game the game pieces found during archaeological excavations, because it often happens that not a single board has survived. However, due to the connection with the Middle Ages, the style of decoration and size, it is likely that our game the accessory could have been used to play the throne tabula in the Middle Ages,” said the report.
Recall that the cult shooter STALKER, known throughout the world, appears in the form of a board game.
