A 24-year-old man from Shanghai, China brought his grandmother to life with artificial intelligence to be able to talk to her.
This publication reports South China Morning Poststarted a discussion about the application of new technologies in the country, which is just working on the rules for the development of AI in its territory.
Case
A young Chinese man used imaging software and old photographs to create a dynamic image of his grandmother.
Then he coached artificial intelligence to imitate the tone of her voice by using recordings of her telephone conversations with her grandmother before her death.
She also spent time talking to ChatGPT to learn how to make the AI behave like her.
“I shared many details of my grandmother’s life with ChatGPT, hoping that he would understand my grandmother’s family history and speech so that she could communicate with me in my grandmother’s tone,” Wu said.
Talk
Through the video you can see the result of the work of a young man.
“Grandma, my dad and I are returning to our hometown to celebrate the Lunar New Year with you this year,” Wu says in the recording. My dad called you last time. What did you say to him?”
“I told him not to drink wine. Be frugal and don’t play cards,” Grandma replied. The video can be viewed at this link.
During the conversation, the image of the grandmother looked attentively, as if listening, and her mouth moved when she spoke.
The young man indicated that his grandmother died of COVID-19 at the age of 84 at the height of the pandemic. She claims to have raised him after her parents divorced. He assures that he never had the opportunity to say goodbye, as she remained in a coma until her death.
“This project is just for psychological comfort, but it’s nice to look at grandma and talk to her more,” she says.
