But researchers at New York University appear to have discovered a mechanism at the cellular level that paves the way for a cure.
A central element of their discovery, published this Wednesday Nature, is the behavior of a melanocyte stem cell. Stem cells have the ability to endlessly self-renew and perform their specific function. In this case, some in the hair become melanocytes, cells that specialize in coloring the skin or hair by producing the pigment melanin.
