Bible, the best-selling book in history with over 5 billion copies sold worldwide, continues to be the protagonist of several scientific discoveries despite having a religious element. Now, a team of scientists claim to have uncovered a “hidden chapter” of a biblical text that is about 1,750 years old thanks to the technique of ultraviolet photography.
According to this new study, published last March in the journal New Testament Studies, Grigory Kessel -teacher Austrian Academy of Sciences and a renowned medievalist, discovered the existence of these new writings hidden under layers of other text when he decided to study them using various ultraviolet light techniques. The find, in particular, is an early translation gospel.
The Bible is still shrouded in mystery
As explained on the portal Popular Mechanicsthe author of this discovery had to apply an unorthodox technique with “holy scriptures” in order to obtain the axis of his research. “The tradition of Syriac Christianity has seen various translations of the Old and New Testaments. Until recently, only two manuscripts containing the Syriac translation of the Gospels were known.explained Kessel.
It is believed that the fragment found Kessel is a recently found translation of one of the pre-existing chapters gospel. In particular, it refers to chapter 12 Matthew and was originally included in one of the versions Bible into Old Syriac 1500 years ago. This translation is believed to have been originally written in the 3rd century and copied hundreds of years later in the 6th century. About 1300 years ago some modern scribe Palestine he erased the translation in order to use parchment again, which was rare at the time.

The importance of this new discovery
The hidden chapter Kessel Discovered gives a different interpretation gospel belonging New Testament belonging Bible. The Greek original of chapter 12, verse 1 reads: “At that time Jesus was walking through the wheat fields on the Sabbath; and His disciples became hungry and began to pluck the ears and eat.. Regarding the Syriac translation found by the author, he says: “[…] They began to collect the ears, rub them with their hands and eat..
“This discovery demonstrates how productive and important the interplay between modern digital technology and research can be when it comes to medieval manuscripts.”mentioned Claudia RappDirector of the Institute Medieval Studies of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
