A 61-year-old Chinese citizen was detained at Man Kam Customs in China. Hong Kong, while trying to leave the territory with 510,000 contraband electronic components.

Among his goods, the Chinese kept processors, SSDs, cell phones and laptops.

I thought they wouldn’t notice

The devices were stored in at least 30 wooden crates inside the container of his truck.

He labeled the boxes as display panels, which are taxed less overseas.

“This is the largest land-based smuggling case since 2018,” said Chief Inspector Wong Chi-man of the Customs’ Cargo Handling and Vehicle Division.

The truck driver was arrested and released on bail pending further investigation, as it is possible that he is just a carrier hired to transport the goods.

common crime

Hardware PC costs much less Hong Kong what in Chinatherefore, many merchants seek to smuggle units in order to earn more.

In December 2022, a woman was caught trying to penetrate China with over 200 processors hidden in a fake pregnant belly.

In March, a man was caught trying to smuggle 160 processors and 16 cell phones into the country, all attached to his body.

In 2021, a trucker tried to get out of Hong Kong with 256 Intel computer processors (CPUs) attached to his body, smuggled into Macau, but customs confiscated him.

Another CPU smuggling attempt, believed to be related to a third, was foiled just ten days later at the same crossing. This time, the scanners found 52 Intel chips nestled between the front seats.
