in various parts of the world, April 1 is a key date for computer security. WITH “Fool’s Day” “April Fool’s Day”, the equivalent of April Fool’s Day on December 28, there are many pranks going on on the Internet, ranging from fake news to malware distributed via social media with the intent to damage our equipment. Thanks to this custom, the international information security community It is recommended to make a backup the day before. That’s how “Reserve Day”

The World Backup Day website offers this habit as a defense against jokes the next day, and also as a wake-up call for the coming days. the interest of an ordinary user in preserving the most valuable information: “This is not only a day to back up your personal data, but also a day to talk about the enormous challenge of preserving our increasingly digital heritage and cultural works for future generations.”

According to site statistics, 3 out of 10 people have never backed up the most important files on your phone or computer. In addition, it mentions that 113 phones are lost or stolen every minute in the world, and one in ten computers is infected with viruses every month.

What is a backup and why do it?

When we talk about “Backup”, We are talking about a group of files that we need to back up somewhere safe in case our hardware gets damaged. This way, if something happens to us, we can recover most of the information.

There are two obvious degrees of backup:

First time. When you make your first backup, you should understand that do not copy the entire computer. There are system files that can be restored when you reinstall Windows, so you don’t need to bring that copy with you. What you should copy: documents, photos, videos, audio and files that you often work. Just in case, it includes a Downloads folder.

Frequent. In this case, you should already be familiar with programs to copy only the new documents you create daily. Many of these come with external hard drives that you buy, so put them to good use. Try to password protect them and put them in a safe place. If your computer has an optional hard drive tray, add a few for faster transfers.

In some cases, Easiest way to get an external hard drive and copy all the files in one go. This is a process that can take several hours due to some variables such as the type of hard drive or the size of the information being transferred, as well as the speed of the USB port we are currently using. For a faster process, try getting solid state drives or external SSDs. because its speed and resistance is greater. Remember to be careful with settings for PC and Mac.

Here are my hard drive recommendations for home use.

The ones I personally use:

On a PC, I use network drives and video surveillance drives to increase the recording speed:

Firecuda SSD M2 PCIe 520 – primary drive

Seagate Skyhawk 4 TB

WD Red 4TB

I currently use these as external drives:

WD Passport Wireless 4TB – take it with you –

Seagate Plus Hub 4TB – Desktop –

Patriot PXD 1TB – for copies from cell phones

The ones you could get:

WD Elements 8TB USB 3.0 Hard Drive

Seagate Portable 5TB USB 3.0 Hard Drive

LaCie 4TB Rugged – shock and water resistant –

Samsung Portable SSD 500GB USB 3.1

SanDisk Extreme 1TB USB-C Portable SSD

WD MyPasport GO 500 GB SSD

1TB Lacie Portable SSD

The other viable solution is the cloud. This is the most difficult process, but if we mechanize actions, we can do it efficiently and almost automatically. Systems such as Google Drive, OneDrive, and others have desktop applications that only allow you to copy new files.. In addition to copying your files from your phone or PC, there are several backup services:

Whatsapp. In Settings – Chat, find “Backup” and schedule file uploads “daily”. This includes documents, photos, videos, and stickers.

google photo. In “Settings”, activate the sync option. It even allows you to copy to the Google Cloud without taking up Google Drive space, screenshots, or other folders that need to be copied.

For documents, Office 365 and Google Docs synchronize saved documents on the same platform. If you are using Word on Windows, select “OneDrive” as the destination folder, and every change in the file will be immediately saved. This applies to the entire office suite. The same thing happens in Word

But what if I have multiple computers at home and want everyone to keep a copy? I am using a network hard drive.

In my case I am using Synology DS218Play, an isolated network unit of PCs and laptops that connects to my home network and becomes a server. Actually, the value of these NAS drives (“Online Storage” or “Network Attached Storage”) and allows me to connect to the Internet and intranet for my files in my “own cloud at home”.

At the moment, the solution does not seem viable to everyone, but I am comfortable managing teams and tasks at home. I can backup from any PC and phone, stream movies to TVs, download torrents directly to disk, not including PC, view content hosted at the office or while traveling, and use all system resources from anywhere in the world.

Synology's interface is very similar to Windows, and you can drag and drop files and install apps to manage everything.

Unlike other simpler NAS drives, In this computer, I can replace the hard drives inside and put in new ones, if one of them is damaged. Good thing this cloud backup has RAID 1, a system that provides data redundancy and creates a “mirror drive” of my backup. If one goes down, I’ll have the information in the other so I can keep my copies safe.

This solution is ideal for small offices, for users who want to watch movies and series over the network, for people who travel a lot and need their own remote network drive, and for remote workplaces where many internal files need to be shared.

And for phones?

HMD recommends an easy way to back up your phone and avoid losing valuable data by losing it or resetting it in an emergency:

Back up your smartphone data via Google Driveso you can store your photos, documents, contacts, and more in the cloud, and you can access them from any other device whenever you need to.

Google Photos lets you save images right in the cloud automatically. We remind you that this service will no longer be free from June 1st.

From your Android smartphone you can access the settings > System > Backup. Thus, you can easily activate the backup on your smartphone.

After making a backup and making sure that all your information is in the cloud, you are protected in case of theft or loss of your phone, because in a few minutes you will be able to access it. The same applies when you need to change your phone.
