The researchers hope that their development can be used to replace other plastic materials in the future.
Materials scientists Allison Christie and Scott Phillips at Boise State University in the US have developed a new type of plastic. It does not require crude oil to produce it. Science Alert writes about it.
It is noted that 93% of new plastic can be recycled into pure raw materials, which can be used for remanufacturing.
A new type of plastic was created based on ethyl cyanoacrylate. It is based on the monomer used to make superglue.
The material, like others, is formed by polymerization – individual repeating units of monomers are combined as a result of a chemical reaction and thus form a long chain.
“Its production on an industrial scale will replace polystyrene plastics, which are generally not accepted by most recycling programs. We are talking about materials used to make container for takeaway food, as well as disposable plates, cups and cutlery,” – scientists noted.
We remind you, early scientists discovered that wax worm saliva quickly destroys plastic bags. Its enzymes degrade polyethylene within hours at room temperature and can revolutionize recycling.
