The Tang Dynasty was a Chinese imperial dynasty that ruled from 618 to 907 AD. It was founded by Li Yuan.
In the city of Datong, during construction work, 58 tombs from the middle and late Tang Dynasty were discovered. This was reported by Heritage Daily.
In particular, archaeologists have found small and medium-sized shaft-like tombs with a rectangular, trapezoidal or irregular shape, and some with a concave shape, where the coffin of the deceased was placed.
Two tombs also contain stone tombstones dated 795 and 810 AD. They are decorated with carvings with the 20 symbols of the Chinese zodiac.
More than 300 artifacts were also unearthed during the excavations, including trapezoid-shaped pots, numerous bronze glasses, and several jugs, pots, and bowls.
“This is the largest number of Tang tombs excavated in Datong. It provides an accurate basis for age determination and provides important information for understanding the political, economic, cultural and burial customs of Yunzhou in Tang Dynasty,” said the Shanxi Institute of Archaeology.
