YouTube decided to put an end to one of the most annoying and intrusive commercials that appear in videos on his platform. The Google subsidiary has decided to change the way ads are displayed in monetized content, so it will remove “overlay ads” from all content stored on its servers starting April 6 this year.
As he mentioned in his post on official blog”advertising overlays” are a type of pop-up advertising banners that often interrupt or obscure the content being played. YouTube for desktop or browser. The firm said the “outdated ad format” was deemed “harmful to viewers” and would therefore be removed.
It is important to note that the option has not been available in the mobile application for a long time. YouTube and, replacing them, often overlooked ad formats before, in the middle and after the video.
YouTube Says Goodbye to Most Annoying Ads
A message published by the company in YouTube Help Forum mention the following: “Starting April 6, 2023, the overlay ad format will no longer appear on YouTube to help improve the viewer experience and shift attention to more effective ad formats on mobile and desktop. Ad overlays are a legacy ad format that was only displayed on desktop computers and annoyed viewers. We expect the impact to be limited for most creators as engagement shifts to other ad formats.”.
The video platform also stated that the removal of the overlays option would have a “limited impact” on YouTube Creators. To combat this, there will be a switch to “other ad formats”, but no further details have been released on this. Because desktop is the only place where “overlays” are shown, this option may represent a smaller proportion of the ads shown on eligible content.

YouTube “ad overlays” with expiration dates
Starting April 6, 2023, it will no longer be possible to enable or add “ad overlays” from YouTube Studio when accessing content monetization options. It’s not entirely clear what Google plans to replace these pop-ups with, but “other ad formats” may take notice of the recent “Product Tagging” feature (Product labeling), which allows creators to tag products used or featured in videos.
What is certain is that desktop users will benefit the most from this solution. YouTube because intrusive elements will no longer hide or interfere with video content. Some ad blocking plugins have already been able to block these types of ads and it remains to be seen how this can be replaced.
