The Egyptian-Spanish Archaeological Mission announced this Friday the discovery of 22 graves dating from Persian, Byzantine and Coptic times in the province of Minia in Upper Egypt, according to the High Council of Antiquities.
The new discovery comes from the El Bahnasa site, where the Spanish Archaeological Mission, led by the University of Barcelona, works and where archaeologists have found threegraves in limestone from the Roman period, three more from the Persian period, and sixteen from the Byzantine and Coptic periods.
According to the statement of the aforementioned department, circulated by various Egyptian media, several bodies found inside graves they were protected by decorated shrouds, and in some tombs archaeologists have found offerings consisting of two frogs placed in two jugs.
He added that in other parts of the necropolis, restoration work was carried out on the structure of the basilica found in the necropolis itself, as well as on the wall paintings in the crypt.
Works in the upper necropolis
General Secretary of the Supreme Council of Antiquities EgyptMustafa Vaziri, explained that the work at Al Bahnas during the last archaeological season, which ended in January, was focused on the upper necropolis, one of the most important sites of the site.
He also confirmed that the excavations at the necropolis of El-Bahnas, divided into four sectors, “gave important results related to the history of this site, which will be studied” and predicted that “it will reveal many secrets of this important site.” place of the ancient Egypt”.

The current El Bahnasa, the ancient Greco-Roman city of Oxyrhynchus, is considered one of the most important archaeological sites in Egyptology due to its wealth of artifacts found, as well as numerous papyri and other excavated objects that are still being studied.
