Prototype interplanetary ship starship from SpaceX has just taken a big step towards its first orbital test flight, which Elon Musk plans to do in March.
First step option starshipknown as Booster 7ignited 31 of its 33 Raptor engines during a “static fire test” conducted Feb. 9 at a Starbase facility in SpaceX in south Texas.
“The team turned off one engine just before launch, and the other stopped itself, so there were 31 engines turned on in total. But there are still enough engines to go into orbit, ”Musk himself said on Twitter after the tests.
Refractory
The static frame lasted about seven seconds, duration SpaceX foreseen in advance. At the end, the huge cloud of smoke generated by the engine firing dissipated andl booster 7 it reappeared in perfect condition, according to Space.com.
This engine start test is a key step for the first start. starshipwhich will consist of flying in one orbit around the Earth.
Automobile starship which is being prepared for launch into space consists of a prototype super heavy called Booster 7 and a variant of the Ship 24 upper stage that was removed from the rocket for this final test.
It is planned that during its first flight into space, the spacecraft starship circle the Earth once for the purpose of splashdown in the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii. Booster 7 it will return to Earth in the Gulf of Mexico shortly after launch.
The most powerful in history
Duet Booster 7-Ship 24 it will be the most powerful rocket ever launched, replacing NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, which debuted November 16 as part of the agency’s Artemis 1 lunar mission.
In that takeoff, the SLS generated 8.8 million pounds of thrust. 33 Raptor Super Heavys produce about 16.5 million pounds of thrust at full power, according to SpaceflightNow.
SpaceX is developing Starship to carry people and cargo to the Moon, Mars and beyond. NASA has chosen the rover as the first crewed lunar lander under its Artemis program, and Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa has booked a trip around the moon on the rover for himself and several artists and influencers.
