Animals and people came from the Baltic Shield. The present territories of Finland and parts of Norway and Sweden.
The Vikings who came to England brought not only helmets, axes and beards, but also animals. Especially horses and dogs. The Guardian writes about it.
Such conclusions were reached by experts studying the cremated remains dating back to 865, when the great Viking army arrived in the lands of England.
“This is the first scientific evidence that the Vikings actually brought animals from Scandinavia with them. It’s great to have scientific evidence that we can see later in the tapestry from Bayo where the Normans landed the fleet, but it’s 200 years that’s the past,” said Professor Julian Richards, co-author of the study at the University of York.
The scientists also analyzed the ratio of different isotopes of strontium in cremated remains found in a burial mound at Heath Wood, Derbyshire.
“This is the only known large-scale Viking cremation site in the British Isles, associated with a great Viking army that wintered in 873-874 AD at nearby Repton. Previous work on the mound discovered the bones of two elders and a children, as well as dogs, horses and another animal – possibly a pig,” the scientists said.
Horses and dogs must have been status symbols in the Viking tradition.
