Between January 1, 2020 and December 31, 2021, the true rate of so-called excessive deaths due to COVID-19 reached approximately 14.9 million people, the World Health Organization (WHO) said.

COVID-19-related deaths are associated with other health conditions for which people do not have access to prevention and treatment because health systems are overwhelmed by the pandemic.

“These frustrating data not only point to the impact of the pandemic, but also to the need for all countries to invest in more resilient health systems that can support vital health services over time. of the crisis, ”said WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

A large proportion of excessive deaths (84%) occur in Southeast Asia, Europe and the Americas. Middle -income countries account for 81% of excessive deaths, 53% in low middle -income countries and 28% in upper middle -income countries. Of the total number of deaths, 57% were male, 43% were female.

At the same time, according to official statistics, as of May 5, 2022, 515,599,638 cases of coronavirus were recorded in the world. Of these, 470,327,680 patients were cured, 6,270,933 died.

By the way, doctors say that since the end of February 2022, the epidemic situation with COVID-19 in Ukraine has improved significantly. The number of deaths from the coronavirus in the past month has dropped more than fourfold – to 10 people a day.
