Mercedes Benz announced it has achieved Level 3 autonomy certification for its vehicles in the United States, a step up from its own Tesla.
“We are all very proud to continue this leadership and celebrate this monumental achievement as the first automotive company certified for Level 3 Conditional Automated Driving in the US market,” the CEO said. Mercedes Benz United States, Dimitris Psillakis, in a statement.
What does this achievement mean?
Autonomy levels indicate how far a user can decouple from a vehicle so they can drive on the highway on their own.
Level 3 is still a long way from the robust sci-fi autonomous driving feature, and in many ways it is still very similar to the level 2 systems currently used on the roads. You can keep your car in your lane, adjust your speed based on the vehicle in front, and even change lanes.
But there is one notable exception: drivers don’t have to constantly keep their eyes on the road, which can free them up to read articles or play video games on the infotainment screen.
Tesla is currently at level 2 with its autopilot support software.
Race
companies such as Tesla, Mercedes-Benz, General Motors, Volkswagen and Ford compete in a market where autonomous driving is trying to dominate.
Waymo and Cruise argue that moving to Layer 4 technologies, systems that can allow the driver to take a nap, from Layer 2 makes much more sense because handoffs between humans and their software assistants can be imperfect or even fatal.
