members ares project from the University of Piura (UDEP) started construction of the Human Force Vehicle (HPV), the model to be sent to POT for Human Exploration Rover Challenge (GERK).
In this global competition, only two Peruvian universities are among the finalists: UDEP and the National Engineering University (St.UNI).
What is the competition about?
GERK invites students to create a human vehicle that can be used to explore other worlds such as Mars.
In October 2022, both Peruvian study houses were among the 61 final projects.
” HPV It is only a human-powered vehicle. That is, the bicycle HPVbecause with the help of the pedals the person moves the legs and they transmit power to the vehicle, which moves in accordance with the strength and speed of the pilot,” explains Javier Reyes Farias, 8th cycle mechanical and electrical engineering student at UDEP and director of the project, he explains to the information agency Andina.
“What we need to do is a vehicle with pedals. They asked us not to use chains like bicycles because they can easily come off or break and they also need lubrication,” he says.
FROM HPV it depends solely on the astronauts who go on the mission. If they need to rest, they can stop for a while and then continue. There are no limits on how far they can go with a tank of gas or extra batteries,” he adds.
Presentation details
The design provides criteria for resistance, steering and suspension with springs and flexible arms that allow the car to soften bumps over rough terrain. The running system for airless tires has been provided by a 3D designed tread with hard geometry criteria that allow it to stick to the surface; in addition to the system for easy assembly and disassembly, drop-down, for transport on expeditions POT.
After I finished HPVthe student team will present their project virtually POT 2nd of March. In April, he will be flown to Alabama for a face-to-face exhibit at the facility. On this day, in addition to mobilization, the rover will have to extract water from a horizontal pipe, as well as lift a heavy cover and extract water.
