Archaeologists are working near two Roman bridges built over the Penkalas stream.
During the excavations in the ancient city of Aizanoi, included in the Tentative UNESCO World Heritage List, the heads of the statues of Eros, Dionysus, Hercules and some other characters of ancient mythology were discovered during the excavations. This was reported by Dumplupinar University in Kutahya.
It has been mentioned that during the Roman period, Aizanoi reached its peak thanks to the production of grain, wine and sheep’s wool. Thus, the city is considered one of the metropolises of that time with historical buildings such as the theater, stadium, agora and the Temple of Zeus.
In recent years alone, archaeologists have made a number of discoveries here. For example, they found two jugs with hundreds of ancient coins and the remains of ancient statues.
However, scientists from Dumplupinar University in Kutahya, at the site of two bridges built over the Penkalas stream, conducted new excavations and discovered a two-meter statue, missing half of the pedestal and one leg.
Other finds include the heads of statues of Eros, known as the god of love in Greek mythology, Dionysus, the god of wine, and Hercules, a demigod.
