plenary session of the Congress will interrogate the Minister of the Interior this WednesdayWilly Huertaabout the changes made to the national police at the end of August and the complaint of President Pedro Castillo against Colonel Harvey Colchado for the raid on the Government Palace.
The interpellation motion was approved by Parliament last Friday with With 67 votes in favour, and on the proposal of the Board of Directors, Huerta is due to appear before the plenary session from 18:00.
The Avanza País caucus was the one who submitted the proposal to interrogate the head of the ministry, following questions received by the minister in his presentation to the Defense Commission to explain the changes in the PNP high command.
Willy Huerta will also have to answer before the plenary session Congress If these changes in the National Police have anything to do with President Pedro Castillo’s request for the punishment and resignation of Henry Colchado for his part in the operation at the Government Palace to arrest Yenifer Paredes on August 9th.
Minister’s Rationale
On the same Friday, September 2, the Secretary of the Interior stressed before the Congressional Defense Commission that promotion in the police and military is the constitutional power of President Pedro Castillo.
Huerta confirmed that the removal of Luis Vera Llerena, who was replaced by Raúl Alfaro, was because, during his three months as PPP general, “he did not fulfill” the tasks of ensuring the safety of citizens, including reducing crime rates.
“Regarding the reasons for the change of commander-in-chief [de la Policía]I must state that all civil servants, including high-ranking police officers, are constantly being assessed. Thus, it was found that the institutional goals and objectives of ensuring the safety of citizens are not being carried out in a programmed manner,” he explained.
Luis Vera notes that the government fired him for “supporting” the task force.
Lieutenant General Luis Vera Llerena, who was replaced as commander of the PNP a few days ago, said in RPP news that President Pedro Castillo fired him for his position in defense of a special group that works with the Ministry of Public Administration. In addition, he indicated that he learned about his dismissal by telephone, in which he was notified of the resolution that appeared in El Peruano.
“[Salida como comandante PNP] Probably because of my institutional position. I have always defended my institution, whenever we have been working against corruption, we have given due support to the special team and my position on the principle of legitimacy, whether it be because of my strength as a general who loves the institution,” Vera. Llerena said.
