Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Rodríguez Mackay confirmed today that “he is an environmentalist”; however, he reiterated his opposition Escazu Agreement Considering that this Latin American and Caribbean environmental treaty is “inconsistent” with interests From Peru.
In an interview ‘News Expansion”, The foreign minister confirmed that there is a lot of misinformation about this and that the signing of an environmental treaty would mean “impact at the level of sovereignty” of the country.
” Escazu Agreement It is not in the interest of the country, because the International Court of Justice can make a decision that will be binding and binding on all Peruvians, peasants and environmentalists. There is influence at the level of sovereignty,” he criticized.
“It’s enough that there is a tipping point where they don’t agree, they can intervene in a foreign country and anchor us with a judgment that will leave us with our arms crossed,” he added.
Thus, Rodriguez Mackay welcomed the fact that on July 11 the Committee on Foreign Relations decided by a majority vote to file Legislative Resolution No. 239 known as Escazu Agreementwhich establishes that our country is entering into a regional agreement on access to information, public participation and access to justice in environmental matters in Latin America and the Caribbean.
” Escazu Agreement it is archived and there it is necessary to think about national interests. I am not a chancellor for purposes that are not (foreign) in the national interest,” he clarified.
“I am an environmentalist, but the same thing happened with the Escazu Agreement as with the Maritime Convention and other issues on which there was a lot of misinformation,” he added.
Is this the position of the government?
Asked if his rejection of the pact reflects the position of the government of Pedro Castillo, Foreign Minister Rodriguez confirmed that, as a minister appointed by the president, his statements were made “on behalf of the state.”
“[¿Esta postura es personal o del Gobierno?] I am a state minister, and state ministers do what we say in the name of the state. The President has given me confidence that I can direct and carry out the foreign policy that he directs,” he said.
