Brothers Anji and Hugo Espino Lucana, who have been on remand since Tuesday, August 9, have made a sincere confession after they were investigated for influence peddling after winning million-dollar tenders in Pedro Castillo’s government, sources told RPP.
During interrogation in Dirkot (Lima Prefecture), Espino Lucan’s businessmen admitted that the sister of the first lady, Lilia Paredesand the mayor of Angia, who is also on remand, will bid for a S$3 million potable water and sewerage project, according to an El Comercio report.
Hugo Espinofriend Yennefer Paredeswould show that the 90,000 soles he received between October 6 and 26, 2021 from Walter and David Paredes were to be sent by their sister, the first lady. Lilia Paredes, to finance the tender.
The testimonies of both businessmen support the public ministry’s thesis that there is an alleged criminal organization headed by President Pedro Castillo and made up of the Espino brothers.
A sincere confession will strengthen Yenifer Paredes’ preventive detention
Criminal lawyer Carlos Caro in dialogue with RPP newsconsidered that sincere confession to which The Espino Brothers before the prosecutor’s office implies the confession of a crime to other defendants in the case, such as Yenifer Paredes or the wife of the President of the Republic.
“Since we are talking about a case involving several people, confessing to one’s own crime is practically admit the crime of others. For example, the issue of bank transfers coming from third parties that are associated with the first lady,” he said.
In this sense, he believed that, using this legal figure would entail an agreement with the State Ministry in exchange for research perks for Hugo and Angie Espino.
“It is likely that for the purposes of the assessment made by the prosecution, provide mitigation or offer an exclusion of liability depending on the quality and intensity of the information they provide,” he stressed.
On the basis of the information provided, Caro considered that the prosecutor’s office required pre-trial detention for the former mayor of Angii, for Yenifer Paredes, but not for the Espino brothers.
Prosecutors to request Yenifer Paredes 36 months of pre-trial detention
The Anti-Corruption Prosecutors Task Force, led by Marita Barreto, will demand 36 months of preventive detention for Yenifer Paredes and José Medina, the mayor of Anguia.
According to the newspaper El Comercio, the mayor of Anguia and his political advisers refused to testify about the alleged criminal organization. The same position was held by Yennefer Paredes, who also refused to cooperate during interrogation.
Meanwhile, José Dionisio, attorney for Yenifer Paredes, announced a few days ago that his client would not benefit from effective cooperation.
