Special Commission Congress The Ombudsman responsible for selecting suitable candidates for the election will be finally determined on Monday, 27 June. The meeting was supposed to take place last Wednesday, but it was interrupted.
The meeting is scheduled for 11:30 am and will take place in the hall of Francisco Bolognesi of the Legislative Palace. All nine members must be present for a quorum.
plenary session of the Congress agreed since last week on reforming commission who will be in charge of this electoral process. This was arranged on the basis of an agreement, which in turn was accepted by the first group assigned to the case.
The members of the new special commission are Rosangela Barbaran (FP), Silvana Robles (PL), Elvis Vergara (Popular Action), Freddie Diaz (APP), José Williams (Avanza País), Jorge Montoya (RP), Alex Paredes (BM), Roberto Camiche (PD) and Ruth Luque (Somos Perú, Cambio Democrático y Perú Bicentenario).
The process faced interrogation at the judicial level by the Ombudsman’s Union, which filed a lawsuit against the election by the amparo, alleging that it did not comply with the established legislation in this regard. The Third Specialized Court for Constitutional Law of Lima granted the appeal.
The agreement to establish another commission provided for the possibility that, in this new process, the judicial panels would invite the same applicants if they considered it convenient.
They are: Victor García Toma (invited by Popular Renewal, Alliance for Progress and Popular Action), Julia Principe (invited by Avanza Pais), Gastón Soto (proposed by Somoz Peru), Jorge Rioja (Democratico Peru) and Miguel Angel Soria (popular action).
They hope that elections for a new Ombudsman will be held soon.
Congress President Maria del Carmen Alva announced that no later than July, before the end of her term, a new ombudsman would be elected. On this occasion, it became known that this Wednesday members of the new selection committee were called to install them, starting at 1 pm.
“We have to carry out this election, we hope to do it before the end of the administration. A commission has already been formed, which will definitely meet in the near future to agree on guidelines and start an interview with the proposals that the benches have. We must keep in mind that 87 votes are needed to elect the Ombudsman,” he said.
Alva also reaffirmed his refusal to run for re-election as President of the Legislative Branch and assured that the versions that testify to the contrary are the works of the press. He added that the next board of directors should be “always open to dialogue and seeking consensus, as we have done.”
The commission for the election of the Ombudsman will consist of collegiums People’s Power, People’s Action, Free Peru, Alliance for Progress, Country Advance, National Coordination Arbitration Bloc, People’s Renewal and Democratic Peru.
