A rally for European integration was held in Tbilisi

The protesters demanded the resignation of the prime minister and the formation of a new government that would implement the recommendations needed to give the country the status of an EU candidate.

A protest rally was held in the heart of the Georgian capital Tbilisi in front of the parliament building on Friday. Participants demanded that the authorities comply with EU requirements for the country to obtain the status of a candidate for membership. On Friday, June 26, Georgia Online reports.

The protesters demanded the implementation of the agreement concluded between Georgia authorities and the opposition through European Council President Charles Michel. To fulfill these demands, the activists gave the authorities a week, otherwise they promised indefinite protest.

The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and People’s Deputy of Ukraine David Arahamia addressed the audience.

The Ukrainian President expressed that he believes in Georgia’s European future and promised that Ukraine will help the Georgian people on this path. And according to Arahamia, both Ukrainian and Georgian people have always fought for their place in a single European family, but now Georgians are deprived of the opportunity to reunite in Europe. He also called on the citizens of Georgia to review the actions of the current Georgian Dream government.

Georgia applied for EU membership along with Ukraine and Moldova, but the European Commission declined to grant candidate status.

The European Commission recommends that the EU Council recognize Georgia’s European perspective, but before giving the country the status of a candidate for EU membership, it requires Tbilisi to implement some reforms.

In total, the European Commission submitted twelve requests to Georgia, including: overcoming political polarization and ensuring cooperation between political parties; ensuring the full and independent functioning of all state institutions, as well as the improvement of the electoral base, taking into account the recommendations of international organizations.

Further reform of the judiciary, prosecuting institutions and the High Council of Justice is also needed, based on an extensive, inclusive and cross-party consultation process; ensuring the institutional independence of the Anti-Corruption Agency, Special Investigation Service and Personal Data Protection Service; “deoligarchization” – ie. removing the influence of personal interests on economic, political and social life; strengthening the fight against organized crime; greater efforts to ensure a free, professional, pluralistic and independent media environment.

Georgia also needs to take steps to strengthen the protection of the rights of vulnerable groups; consolidating efforts for gender equality; involve civil society in decision-making processes at all levels, as well as amending legislation to ensure that Georgia courts take into account the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR). It is necessary to ensure the transparency of the Ombudsman election process, taking into account the rights of independent candidates.

Recall, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili accused Arahamia and the local opposition of the failure of the campaign for obtaining the status of a candidate member of the European Union.

Earlier, the European Commission did not recommend granting the status of an EU candidate to Georgia. As a result, a protest was even organized in the center of Tbilisi the other day-thousands of people gathered for actions in support of Georgia’s European integration under the slogan Home, to Europe.
