California Judge Thomas Hickson has ordered former President Alejandro Toledo to turn himself in to authorities this Friday, April 7 at 9:00 am to begin his extradition process to Peru.
Hickson’s decision comes hours after the California Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals denied the former president’s request to halt his repatriation to Peru.
“The present Court holds that Alexander Toledo delivered to the Marshalls on April 7 at 9:00 a.m. at 450 Golden Gate Avenue, San Francisco,” the court order, to which he had access, says. News RPP.
On February 21, the State Department granted Toledo’s extradition at the request of Peruvian justice for corruption offences. The former president is accused of accepting multimillion-dollar bribes from the Brazilian company Odebrecht in exchange for promoting its business in the country when he was still head of state.
The former president is under investigation for money laundering, conspiracy and influence peddling in connection with contracts awarded to Odebrecht to build an inter-ocean route between Brazil and Peru.
