He Government of Dina Boluarte ordered the final recall of Peru’s ambassador to Colombia, Félix Denegri Boz, due to repeated interference and offensive language by President Gustavo Petro. According to the executive branch, the foreign president stubbornly does not know that on December 7, a coup d’état was carried out in the country by Pedro Castillo.

“The position of President Petro and his constant interventionist expressions have seriously undermined the historical relationship of friendship, cooperation and mutual respect that existed between Peru and Colombia. Faced with this, Peru has responded in a balanced, progressive and proportionate manner. in accordance with diplomatic practice and given the close relationship that has linked it with Colombia for over 200 years,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The government also indicated that they hope the bicentennial bilateral relations With Colombia return to their own path within the framework of mutual respect and the norms, principles and values that govern coexistence between states.

With the final resignation of the Peruvian ambassador to Colombia, diplomatic relations between the two countries are formally at the level of chargé d’affaires.

Gustavo Petro declared persona non grata

The plenary session of Congress approved last month declaring Colombian President Gustavo Petro persona non grata. The reason that prompted the parliamentarians to make such a decision is related to the statements he made against the Peruvian National Police (PNP) in the context of the protests that are taking place in the country.

The proposal was approved by 72 votes in favour, 29 against and 7 abstentions after an hour-long parliamentary debate. The initiative first passed through the Commission on Foreign Relations because the foreign affairs president criticized the massive police deployment ahead of calls for marches in central Lima on February 9.

“In Peru, they are marching like Nazis against their own people, violating the American Convention on Human Rights,” the President of Colombia said in a speech during the inauguration of the Colombian ambassadors to China, Mexico, Canada and Brazil.

The proposal also calls on the Ministries of the Interior and Foreign Affairs to take the necessary steps to ensure that the President of Colombia “does not enter the country.”
