Plenary session CongressWith 78 votes in favour, 34 against and 7 abstentions, a reconsideration was approved that elections should be held in 2023 rather than postponed until 2024.
This new revision aims to hold presidential elections this October, while President Dina Boluarte’s term ends on December 31, 2023, and her successor will take office from the first day of 2024 until July 28, 2029.
” President of the Republic elected to General Election – 2023 he takes the oath and assumes his duties on January 1, 2024, except for the period provided for in Article 116 of the Constitution, and ends his term on July 28, 2029,” reads the text submitted by Hernando Guerra Garcia.
As for the congressmen and representatives of the Andean Parliament, their terms of office will end on 30 December. Their replacements are expected a day later, until July 26, 2029.
Parliamentarians will now have a new three-hour debate so they can exchange views and finally vote so that the general election can be confirmed this year.
Popular Renewal rejects offer
At the beginning of the session of Congress, José Williams gave an account of the official letters submitted by the pews popular update and Arbitration block arguing that the reconsideration put forward by Fuerza Popular “should be declared inadmissible in its entirety” and not be put to a vote.
The Chairman of the Board of Directors authorized a point of order discussion to invalidate a vote review proposing to postpone the general election to 2023. Subsequently, the initiative was rejected with 51 votes in favour, 58 against and 9 abstentions.
Edward Malaga against the proposal
Congressman Edward Malaga Trillo, who is not part of the group, disagreed with Fuerza Popular’s proposal to move the general election to this year instead of April 2024, as proposed by the executive.
Málaga Trillo believed that changing the original timeline would prevent electoral and political reforms, which he believed would help the country’s governability.
“I don’t agree with that. [propuesta de Fuerza Popular]but not necessarily for a period. When we talked a few months ago about how we got out of the crisis, Mr. [Pedro] Castillo in government and I said that we have to follow three steps: vacancy, reforms and promotion of elections. The priority is reforms,” he said.
