Chief Justice Javier Arevalo took office as President of the Judiciary this morning in a ceremony held in the Hall of Manuel Vidaurre National Palace of Justice. Arevalo succeeded Elvia Barrios as holder of the aforementioned state power for the period 2023–2024.
The ceremony was attended by the President of the Republic, Dina Boluarte; congress president, Joseph Williams; President of the Constitutional Court, Francisco Morales Saravia; President of the National Electoral Jury, Jorge Luis Salas Arenasamong other authorities.
“We, from our position, We are committed to offering quality justice services to the nation with a human face, that is, at the service of all Peruvians, especially the most vulnerable,” he said during his first speech after being sworn in.
“The independence of the judiciary requires commitment on the part of judges.. That is why I must say that the greatest harm to our institution is done by those judges who knock on the wrong door or seek recommendations for access to preliminary charges. In the specific case of the Supreme Court during my reign, judges will be called on the basis of specialization, meritocracy and gender parity,” he added.
“We condemn all acts of violence against women”
On the other hand, he mentioned that he would present remuneration bill for judges and specified that their efforts would be directed towards eradicate violence against women and communities in vulnerable situations.
“We will introduce a bill in Congress to regulate the remuneration and benefits of justices of the peace and the scale of remuneration for judicial officers. In the same way, we will take into account the obligations and benefits for these employees in the specified law,” he said.
“We reject and condemn all acts of violence against women, just as we reject any act of violence and hatred against other communities in vulnerable situations. That is why, during my reign, we will promote all those measures that are aimed at protecting and protecting women, maintaining sanctions for the behavior that going against them. Thus, we will continue the work begun by Dr. Elvia Barrios,” he added.
Arevalo was elected to this position by nine votes.
Recall that Arevalo Vela was elected on December 1 last year after a majority vote of judges Hector Lama Mora and Carlos Arias Lazarte. A total of nine votes were cast from the Chief Justices of the Full chamber of the Supreme Court those who supported the new head of the judiciary.
Prior to taking office, Arevalo served as President of the Second Chamber of Transitional Constitutional and Social Law of the Supreme Court and was previously a member Executive Council of the Judiciary.
