This mistake is the second in the history of the company. Twitter has been increasing user data since 2014.
The management of the social network Twitter admitted that it has increased audience numbers since 2019. This is explained by a mistake that has not been noticed for nearly three years, the Financial Times wrote.
It was noticed that the platform calculates the audience according to its own measure of unique “monetized” users – mDAU.
Thus, in the report for the first quarter, the social network reported that the number of such users grew to 229 million with an increase of 6.4% in the US and 18.1% in other countries. The corresponding data exceeded the expectations of investors.
However, the Twitter administration said it saw an error in user data for the first quarter of 2019 and admitted that it had not been noticed for nearly three years, which led to an increase in mDAU.
So, after recalculation, the difference varies from 1.4 million to 1.9 million users, that is, less than one percent of the total.
“A mistake was made at the time so activities through the master account resulted in all linked accounts being counted as mDAUs,” the company explains.
They also added that fake and spam accounts accounted for “less than 5%” of mDAU in the quarter.
Meanwhile, according to the FT, the company’s net revenue rose to $ 513 million on the back of one -time revenue from the $ 1 billion sale of its MoPub mobile advertising division to AppLovin. The company’s revenue for the first quarter of the year reached 1.2 billion. Expectations are great. The negative trend in the company is explained by the war in Ukraine.
It is noteworthy that the error was discovered just days after Twitter entered into a deal with Elon Musk, which acquired its shares worth $ 44 billion.
